All the other stuff about making better docs, install guides, tools and marketing is all good. Be careful your castle is not being built on sand ...

It sounds very annoying.
:D :D :D
But is it really so ?
Namecoin is not a building but much more like a village built on a rock or whatever it is.(like the main developer also compared Bitcoin with this)
And the common fundament is not the client but the network. The client is just the main building and we already have some forks of it which is not necessary bad. (by Bitcoin is also not differently) The network itself is not forked and nobody intends to do it.
It is correct that rebasing getting more and more difficult but not because of the additional tools or wikis and manuals. (this would even help)
But because the Bitcoin client is more and more complex.
But it is easier to rebase the client on every Bitcoin client version step by step or it is easier to do it at once ?
We shouldn't do anything that change the network until the rebase is done because that would make it also more difficult. I agree.
But can everybody work on the rebase ? I don't think so.
So what should do the others ? Stay quietly or something which helps Namecoin but doesn't change the network and therefore don't make the rebase more difficult.

Wikis, manuals, tutorials, browser addons, marketing, collecting donations, identity based implementations (like Bitmessage or website login with id) would change the network ? I don't think so. And if cannot work all on the main building(rebased client) some can work on the others. Or not ?

Post Re: What next?
Multiple BTC/NMC address is a very good idea, but the probleme is: how this money will be distributed between developers ? Who decide ?

For me, before implementing too much products, the NMC problems have to be fixed first:

1- as NMC are destroyed when someone buy a domain, in 2 century, nobody will be able to buy a domain (well ok, we have time to fix that and our grand children will do that, but maybe not)
2- Giving Trust to someone or something must be free. Voting is the same as giving Trust, I trust an idea, mean I vote for it, But nobody wants to mine free transactions, of course.

So maybe "Lost Coins" from buying domains, can be distributed to those trust transactions miners having no transaction fees ?

because, for development direction, for donations share, and for so many other purpose,
I think we will need a voting system (also free, and anonymously should be a good thing, but very complex to limit abuses, I know. I think it is possible anyway, but one brain is maybe not enouth)

And for the record, in one or two months, my current dev contracts will be done, and I'll try working few months, and maybe more, to this dot-bit project
for free (but donations accepted) because of my convictions, I really think the web 3.0 is growing here ;)
well, I did not read too much code yet, and I understand that rebasing from bitcoin should becoming more and more complex in time, but there's so much to build around this concept, the bases should be solid enouth to support all of these

Post Re: What next?
someone should fix the destroyed coins problem, maybe the coins can be put back into circulation? as a way to continue the network way past the last mining days of Bitcoin. I think this could be very interesting, as mining is important and the fees may not work to maintain the network, what if the network tanks and everyone starts losing money by trying to earn namecoins? Just look at the situation now.

Could this be done without forking the network? All that is needed is just to get the coins back into the hands of miners.

Destroyed coins is not a serious problem IMHO and should be postponed until after the rebase. There have been discussions about this issue in other threads.

The tight value space constraints and a modified fee structure are more pressing but it would be cleaner to postpone these, too.

I agree with moa in that the very main focus of client development should be rebasing even if it is hard to sell. Peripheral stuff is mostly independent technically.

By now I see two issues with multiple donation addresses:
* much more administration effort (virtual_master would have to do it all :P)
* could drag money away from the rebase (but could also bring in more if a project takes off but would take time)

So I suggest we postpone the splitting of donation addresses until after the rebase, too. Of course everybody is free to collect his own donations for peripheral projects and whatever.

edit: Modified the OP to reflect the input above.

As we can see the forum spamming is also a problem and solving this with Namecoin ID registration wouldn't disturb the rebasing and also wouldn't fork the network.
I think somebody offered to make it. That would be excellent and would also create a general OpenID alternative to login to any site with id/ name entry. That could be even become the most popular Namecoin application.

Other alternatives to destroying coins where discussed in another thread. Miners receive also the miner fee. Destroying coins is independent of it and was implemented with a good reason.
Destroying coins could be lifted in the future if using another solution(best would be blocking coins with a time-shifted transfer in a higher amount as now for the registration duration - as I proposed) to protect the network but already destroyed coins cannot be brought back.

I have updated the OP. If you feel something (your work) is missing please let me know.

Also looking forward to general input. Maybe we should put a list like this on the wiki?

These three are already covered, I've written clear and extensive tutorials for them. First for the FreeSpeechMe site, then expanded and improved on the MeowBit site. They're covered with Creative Commons Attribution license, feel free to copy them with a link and attribution, or just link them if you'd like. Take them from the MeowBit site, since Jeremy locked me out of FreeSpeechMe I haven't been able to update that site as new information comes in, so the MeowBit site tutorials are more robust and all-inclusive:

> Beginner manual ("getting started")

That's here:
What is Dot-Bit?
http://meowbit.com/what-is-dot-bit/

> browsing
I'd recommend MeowBit for Windows, FreeSpeechMe for Linux. If Jeremy finds a Mac and outputs FreeSpeechMe for Mac, that could be recommended for Mac.

Maybe also recommend that "training wheels for Dot-Bit", that plugin for Chrome, I forget the name, but make it clear it doesn't use the full features of Namecoin, and is not secure.

> setting up domains

That's here:
.bit mirror your site
(also has section on dot-bit-only site setup.)

[urlhttp://meowbit.com/set-up-dotbit-sites/[/url]

Improve the website
Get more websites on .bit (maybe as an additional shortcut domain)

I have a list of working dot-bit sites here, I expand it as I learn of more:
http://meowbit.com/list-of-working-dot-bit-websites/

Namecoin projects
Have some fun and continue looking for the killer application.

I'd say for viewing sites on Windows 7/8, XP and Vista, MeowBit is the killer app, until someone has a lite client. MeowBit is system-wide and works on all browsers. Will also work on FTP, IM, and e-mail, theoretically, if back-end changes were put in for the servers for those functions.

Y'all REALLY need to get namecoin.org from whoever has it and point it to namecoin.info. I know there was discussion that the owner of that site was willing to do it, but you should do it NOW. That site shows up before .info in a google search, and looks more "official."

I sent this e-mail today to the producer of a radio show that interviewed Derrick about Dot-Bit and MeowBit this morning. This is the 5th or 6th time I"ve had to send a similar e-mail. I doubt most people bother to send this e-mail, and it's a waste of time and resources for everyone involved to have to do this (and risk not doing it every time):
=-=-

Donna,

interview looks like it went well.

One small correction for the listing on the site, the official site for Namecoin is
namecoin.info
not
namecoin.org

Can you change that please?

Thanks!
MWD

Yes, this has been bothering me while now but Pitbull for some reason won't give it to the project. @Pitbull: Why?

About the docs: great, somebody move it to the wiki. :p

phelix, thank you for your service. People usually say that to soldiers, I like to say it to people who actually do good things. You do a lot of good for Internet freedom with all you do with Namecoin.
